Snow forces Norfolk coal terminal closure, Mobile terminals still shut

Overnight snow in Virginia's Hamptons Roads region had a mixed effect on the area's three coal terminals, with wintry weather forcing the closure Wednesday of Norfolk Southern's Lambert's Point terminal.
Robin Chapman, a spokesman for the Norfolk, Virginia-based railroad, said the terminal closed 11 pm EST (0400 GMT) Tuesday due to inclement conditions but will resume operations at 7 am EST Thursday.
The Dominion Terminal Associates terminal in Newport News, Virginia, did not close and remains open, manager Rick Cole said.
Kinder Morgan, the Houston-based owner and operator of Pier IX, also in Newport News, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The wintry weather that has gripped the US South had forced two coal terminals in Mobile, Alabama, to close Tuesday.
The Alabama State Port Authority, which owns and operates McDuffie Terminal and its sister terminal, the Bulk Material Handling Plant, said Wednesday that dangerous ice and snow conditions remain and that it will reopen as soon as conditions allow.
