September 3: Spot price of steam coal fell across-the-board on September 2 on low demand amidst expectations of a cut in coal imports by China and softness in gas prices in Europe, market sources said.
While South African standard coal prices slipped by $0.80 per ton, prices of off-spec 5,500 Kcal material declined by $0.70 per ton. Australian steam coal prices softened by $0.75 per ton whereas prices of Indonesian higher better grades fell by $0.50 per ton even as lower grades remained unchanged because of limited scope of decline, they said.
The market is awaiting a clearer picture over China’s proposal to impose a ban on imports of coal in the coming days, they added.
Meanwhile, an official from a leading miner said if prices fall further they would have no option than to stop operation.
