South African Coal Miners End Strike

South African coal mineworkers today ended a 10-day strike after reaching a pay agreement with employers, their union said, relieving pressure on the country's strained power supply.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said it had accepted wage increases from producers, and their 30,000 workers would return to work on Wednesday.

"The union has accepted the revised offer from the companies, this was done after several consultations with the workers," said NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu. "The strike is now over."

The strike had hit mining giants like Anglo American, Exxaro and Glencore threatening the supply of coal to power stations.

South Africa's economy relies heavy on employment provided by mining but a fall in commodity prices has threatened to trigger major job losses.
