South Korea August thermal coal imports up 3% on y-o-y

South Korean thermal coal imports for August rose 3% year on year but fell 6% from July to a three-month low to 8.03 million tonnes, with fewer arrivals from Indonesia offset by more material from Australia, according to customs data on September 21.
Thermal coal imports for the first eight months of the year were 2% higher on year at 63.5 million tonnes.
The highest volume of imported thermal coal in August came from Australia, with 3.17 million tonnes received, jumping 20% on the year, but 21% lower from the previous month.
Shipments from Indonesian fell 3% on year, as well as 3% from July to 2.68 million tonnes, the lowest monthly volume since September last year.
Of the total, 2.25 million tonnes was Indonesian bituminous material, with lower calorific value sub-bituminous material comprising 426,735 tonnes.
South Korea received 1.54 million tonnes of Russian coal during August, slipping 9% on the year and dropping 3% from July.
