State Can Soon Lift Coal From Maha

Energy Minister D K Shivkumar, along with a team of officials from the state, met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai on Tuesday seeking the latter’s intervention to remove constraints in taking up mining in coal blocks allotted to the state.
Karnataka was allocated six coal blocks in Bharanj, Manoradeep and Kailonya in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra in February to meet its coal requirement for its thermal power plants. However, the state could not mine and lift the coal due to stiff opposition from local contractors and mine labourers as they wanted Karnataka to engage them in mining activities.
This forced Shivakumar to meet Fadnavis seeking his intervention. Sources in the Energy ministry said the matter was amicably solved in the meeting with the state government agreeing to engage local contractors and labourers. “With this, coal mining will start in the next six months,” sources said.
