December 12: Steam coal imports through the port of Kolkata rose by a huge margin to 80,060 tons in November 2013 against a mere 13,802 tons recorded in October 2013, as per provisional data available with ICMW.
With this, steam coal imports via Kolkata during the first eight months of 2013-14 stood at 1,663,883 tons against 1,143,830 tons registered in the same period last year in 2012.
Import of the commodity in November 2012 was at 191,338 tons, revealing a 58% year-on-year drop in November this fiscal. Total imports in 2012-13 amounted to 1,696,998 tons.

In November 2013, 4,000 tons arrived from South Africa at a unit price of Rs 6,060 ($96) and the balance 76,060 came in from Indonesia in a price band of Rs 2,900 – Rs 5,144 (46-$82) per ton.
In October 2013, however, imports included 6,780 tons from Indonesia in a price band of Rs 2,529 – Rs 3,131 ($40.65-$50.33) per ton and the balance 7,022 tons arrived from South Africa in a price band of Rs 5,089 – Rs 6,270 ($81.80-$100) per ton.
