Sunny weather boosts Eskom’s coal supply

17 Mar 2014

Power utility Eskom says this weekend’s sunny weather has allowed its wet coal supplies to dry gradually.

Earlier this month Eskom announced that coal supplies were dampened by heavy rainfall, affecting its ability to generate enough electricity.

The power supplier introduced a short spell of load shedding last week when it struggled to meet energy demands.

Eskom’s Andrew Etzinger says operations at power stations are expected to return to normal this week.

“We have adequate reserves, in fact the past week has been a lot better than the week before that. For the coming week we would see that the power situation will be stable.”

In February Eskom declared a power emergency asking industrial customers to cut back on electricity consumption.

Last week Tuesday Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said South Africa is likely to have adequate power supply within the next two years.

Meanwhile outgoing Eskom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Dames on Monday said his replacement has not yet been appointed.

Dames announced his resignation in December after serving just over three years at the helm.
