TANGEDCO’s Aug steam coal imports rise 72% m-o-m

Steam coal imports by power utility Tamil Nadu Electricity Generation Corporation (TANGEDCO) in August 2016 moved up 72.48% to 257,000 tons against 149,000 tons in July 2016, as per provisional information available with ICMW.

Year-on-year, also, steam coal imports by the utility in the first 5 months of fiscal 2016-17 were down 40.35% at 1,660,000 tons compared to 2,783,000 tons imported in the same period of the previous fiscal of 2015-16.

The target for the month under review was not available as CEA has not fixed the coal import target for any of the country’s utilities for 2016-17 in view of higher availability of domestic coal, according to information available with ICMW.

Imports of the fuel by the utility in the full fiscal of 2015-16 were down by 26% at 5,710,000 tons (mt) against 7,689,000 tons imported in 2014-15, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

However, the materialisation for the entire fiscal of 2015-16 was 114% of the target of 5,004,000 tons (5 mt) set for the year.
