TRS Urges Centre to Allocate Coal for New Power Projects

05 Jun 2015

Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has urged Union power and coal minister Piyush Goyal to allocate 33.2 tonnes of coal for the proposed thermal plants in the state.

He also urged the Union minister to ensure early completion of transmission corridor between north and south grids.

Rao made these request to Goyal who called on him at his Camp Office here on Thursday.

Goyal assured the chief minister that he would look into both issues, said a statement from the chief minister`s office.

Goyal complemented the TRS government for supplying electricity without any cuts in its very first year in office. He also hailed the state’s plans to generate 2,500 MW of solar power in one year. Goyal took a copy of the solar power policy of the government.

The chief minister informed Goyal that the Telangana government has already entered into an agreement to buy 1,000 MW from Chhattisgarh. He said another agreement would be signed soon to buy another 1,000 MW. He requested the government to take special interest in ensuring completion of transmission corridor so that Telangana can receive the electricity from north grid.

The chief minister informed Goyal that they would require 765 kv lines from Wardha-Nizamabad-Hyderabad, Angul-Palasa-Vemagiri-Khammam-Hyderabad, Warora-Warangal routes.

He also briefed the Union minister about the steps being taken to make Telangana a power surplus state. He said Telangana Generation Corporation is setting up plants with a capacity of 6,000 MW while NTPC is building plants with capacity of 4,000 MW. He sought allocation of 29.70 million metric tonnes of coal for these projects.

Rao told Goyal that 3.5 tonnes of coal was allocated to BPL in the past but BPL withdrew from power generation. Rao said that the 3.5 tonnes of coal allocated to BPL should be reallocated to the state. The Union minister responded positively for this.

Meanwhile, Goyal suggested to the state government to compulsorily use LED lights for streetlight purposes, so that power could be saved.
