04 Dec 2013

The Power Ministry has initiated talks on coal linkages for 33,000 MW capacity plants that are likely to come up during 2017-22.

"We have to think about the 13th Plan period (2017-22) now, we require coal linkage for 33,000 MW capacity plants and for that we have initiated discussions with the Coal Ministry," Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told reporters after meeting Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

He added that the final decision on linkages will be taken in the future.

"It will take a couple of more meetings to finalise it," Scindia said.

The government is yet to finalise the target for the 13th Plan period.

The capacity addition target for the current Plan period (2012-17) is over 88,000 MW.

According to sources, over 26,000 MW capacity has been added till date.

Scindia also said FSAs (fuel supply agreements) for close to 71,500 MW capacity projects have been signed.

"As many as 157 FSAs between power producers and Coal India have been signed out of the total of 172 and only 15 are pending," Scindia said.

172 pacts are for 78,000 MW capacity projects of which 6,500 MW projects or 15 FSAs are yet to be signed.

The minister said that various other issues were also discussed in today's meeting but he did not elaborate on those issues.
