Tanzania wants coal partners

Kiwira Coal Mine was repossessed by the Tanzania government following exposes that it was illegally and jointly taken up by the former Tanzania President Benjamin Mkapa and his former Finance Minister Daniel Yona.
State-owned mining agency, STAMICO, said the joint venture partner will develop the project by providing a 100% financing of the project and operations.
The Tgovernment transferred the ownership of Kiwira to the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO).
SATAMICO owns a 25-year Special Mining License (SML-233/2005) within the Ivogo Ridge of the Songwe-Kiwira coalfield that’s situated south-east of Mbeya City in Ileje District.
It’s 40 kilometres north-west of Itungi Port on Lake Nyasa and 100 km south of Mbeya city.
Stamico’s objective is to expand the existing underground mine to produce coal from 150,000 tons to 300,000 tons annually, construction of a new opencast mine to produce 1.2 million tons of coal annually.
The state owned corporation also aims at the construction of a 200 MW Power Plant and a 100 km transmission line from the mine site to Mbeya City.
Other projects STAMICO is seeking a joint venture partner are Busanda Gold Prospect. The prospect under prospect licence No. 6477/2010 is located in Busanda area in Geita region and covers an area of 7.98 sq km.
It is located in the eastern part of the Rwamagaza Greenstone Belt and has potential for gold mineralization.
Itetemia Far East Gold Prospect located to the east of world-class mine Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is also seeking a joint venture partner. It has an area of 8.573 sq km and is under prospecting license no. 2654/2004. The property has potential to host gold mineralization.
