22 May 2014
May 22: Tata Power Company Limited (TPCL) recently received the Green nod from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to use imported coal for the 6th unit (500 MW) of the Trombay thermal power station (TTPS), according to information available with ICMW.
Imported coal requirement for modernisation of the 6th unit will be 2 million tons per annum (mtpa). The 6th unit, being a pulverised fuel firedboiler (PF), will not be able to fire pet coke, said the MoEF.
With this, there will be three coal-fired units at TTPS, the other two being unit 5 and unit 8.
Earlier, the company applied to the MoEF, seeking permission to replace low sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) and low sulphur heavy stock (LSHS) with imported coal.
In a letter addressed to TPCL, the MoEF said: ”Sulphur and ash contents in imported coal to be used in the project shall not exceed 0.28% and 5.5% at any given time. In case of variation of coal quality at any point of time, fresh reference shall be made to the ministry for suitable amendments to environmental clearance condition wherever necessary.”
The MoEF further said that GCV of the coal shall be not less than 5,000 Kcal/Kg.
