Tata Power’s wind project receives forest clearance
25 Feb 2016
Tata Power received the forest clearance from a state Green panel for setting up a 52.50-MW wind power project in the Koppal district of Karnataka.
The proposal was scrutinised by the regional empowered committee (REC) of the Union Environment Ministry. The meeting decided that, "Considering the type of the forest land involved and that the purpose of the project is to generate renewable energy, the committee has approved the proposal (of Tata Power)."
Tata Power got the clearance for diverting forest land of 36.27 hectare instead of the proposed 39.10 hectare in the Hanamasagara protected forest in Koppal for setting up of a 52.50 MW wind power project.
The company has been asked to use the existing roads inside the forest land for this project, thereby limiting the requirement of forest land to 36.27 hectare. The proposed project is expected to cater to the power requirement of the state and is likely to generate employment opportunity. RECs are empowered to approve diversion of forest land for projects up to 40 hectares, except proposals relating to mining, regularisation of encroachments and hydel projects.
