US September thermal coal exports drop 22.9% y-o-y

US exports of thermal coal in September fell 22.9% year on year and down 20.2% from August to 1.75 million tonnes, hitting a three-month low, Census Bureau data showed on November 4.
Total US thermal coal exports over January-September were 19.78 million tonnes, dropping 18.9% compared to the same period in 2014.
The Netherlands remained the largest taker of US thermal coal in September at 603,887 tonnes, rising 4% on the year, but falling 28% from August’s 20-month high.
Mexico jumped to the second largest destination in September, with 245,869 tonnes of US thermal coal sent to the country, up 79% year on year and up 24% on month.
Germany received 218,648 tonnes of US thermal coal during the month, jumping 45% on year and compared to only 394 tonnes in August.
The US shipped 105,793 tonnes of thermal coal to South Korea in September, up from nothing in the same month in 2014, but falling 63% from the previous month.
Exports to Chile rose 6% from September 2014 to 49,271 tonnes, which was 53% lower than August’s volume.
