US coal production slips 4.9% year on year in week ended Saturday: EIA

US coal production totaled about 19 million st in the week that ended Saturday, 3.5% below the previous week's total and 4.9% below that of the corresponding week of 2012, the Energy Information Administration said Thursday.
EIA, which bases its estimate on railcar loading data, said production east of the Mississippi River totaled 7.3 million st in the week that ended Saturday, while output west of the Mississippi totaled 11.8 million st.
US year-to-date coal production totaled 919.8 million st, 1.8% below that of the comparable period in 2012, EIA said.
