US weekly coal carloads drop to eight-month low: AAR

25 Feb 2021

Houston — US coal carload originations fell to an eight-month low 48,745 in the week that ended Feb. 20, down 10.6% from 54,496 a week earlier and the lowest since 48,699 in the week ended June 6, 2020, as a winter storm delayed shipments across the US, according to a Feb. 24 report from the Association of American Railroads.

The latest week was also down 23.4% from the year-ago week and 38.4% lower than the five-year average. It was also the lowest total for the corresponding week in over 11 years.
Coal carloads represented 12.9% of all the traffic on US railways, up from 11.3% a week earlier but down from 13.2% in the year-ago week.
