August 6: An upward correction was witnessed in international coal markets on August 5 as prices inched up on expectations of higher demand, market sources said.
While prices of South African and Australian steam coal firmed up in the range of $0.20 to $1.20 per ton, that of the Indonesian variety continued to remain soft, they said.
Reports that China is planning to ban use of coal in its six districts after 2020 caused slight unease among a section of Indonesian miners even as the overall impact of such a ban is yet to be analysed, market sources said.
Coking coal prices firmed up further in anticipation of higher demand in the coming days from major buying countries, including India, they added.
