Vizag Port plans further expansion for cape-size vessels

January 20: Vizag Port is planning to expand further on a long-term basis to berth more cape-size vessels, a port official told ICMW.
“There is a plan to develop the nearby area,” the official said. But added that the process of development is rather time-consuming as the new land policy (Land Policy for Major Ports) mandates that the land allotment and other process should be on tender basis,” the official said.
Currently, the port can berth only a few cape-size vessels due to space constraint.
“There is a scarcity of land for parking cargo. That is the only reason that we are unable to berth capsize vessels at our port right now,” the official said.
“Since we are unable to provide extra space, they (the parities) are going to Gangavaram. Other than that we have good facilities such as cranes, berths having draft of around 18.5 meters etc he added.
He added that the Vizag General Cargo Berth (VGCB) situated at the outer harbour for handling such vessels has a capacity of 4 lakh tons which is already filled.
