April 23: With the new environmental norms coming into effect from next year, demand for washed coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) is expected to go up substantially over the next five years, even though the miner is yet to make any reasonable progress in its washery plans.
The company had washed coal demand of 86 million tons (mt) from the power plants located more than 500 km from pit-head in 2014-15, a company source said.
“This is about 71% of total coal production by MCL. Considering the above trend, the demand for washed coal from the power plants located beyond 500 km will reach up to 118 mt by 2016-17 and by 2019-20, it will reach up to 178 mt,” he said.
