Water storage at 91 reservoirs decrease 22% y-o-y

 December 9: The water storage available in 91 major reservoirs of the country stood at 81.109 billion cubic meters (BCM) as on December 3, 2015, which was 78% of the storage of the corresponding period of last year. The storage was only 51% of the total capacity of these reservoirs, which is 157.799 BCM. This year the storage is significantly low because it is 75% of the average of the corresponding period in the last 10 years.

The southern region has maximum capacity of 51.59 BCM from 31 reservoirs. But only 17.86 BCM, which is 35% of total storage capacity, was available this month. The storage was 71% of the live storage capacity of these reservoirs in the corresponding period last year and 55% of average storage of last ten years.

 The central region has 12 reservoirs with total capacity of 42.30 BCM and this is the second highest among all the regions. The total live storage available in these reservoirs was 27.06 BCM which is 64% of the total live storage capacity. The same was 59% of the total capacity in the same period last year and 74% of the average storage of last ten years

 The western region has storage capacity of 27.07 BCM across 27 reservoirs. But only 13 BCM, which is 48% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs, was available. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 68% of the total storage and 74% of the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

 In the northern region, the storage capacity of 6 reserves is 18.01BCM. Out of this, 66% or 11.88 BCM is stored this year. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 60% of the total storage and average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period was 67% of the total storage.

 In the eastern region, there are 15 reservoirs with total storage capacity of 18.83 BCM. Till December 3, the storage was 11.30 BCM which is 60% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 78% of the total reserve and average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period was 73% of the total reserve.
