Water storage at key reservoirs down 2% w-o-w

April 28: The water storage available at 85 important reservoirs in India stood at 49.25 BCM as on April 23, slightly down from a volume of 50.92 BCM on April 16, and down 11% from the storage level of the corresponding period of last year, an official release said on April 27.

The storage on April 23 was 30% of the total capacity of the reservoirs of 155.046 BCM from 35% on April 16.

The Central Water Commission monitors live storage status of 85 important reservoirs of the country on a weekly basis.

These reservoirs include 37 having hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW. The total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 155.046 BCM which is about 61% of the total storage capacity of 253.388 BCM estimated to have been created in the country.

The 6 reservoirs in the northern region’s Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, with capacity of 18.01 BCM, had storage levels of almost 6.78 BCM, on April 16 up from 6.49BCM as on April 16.

The eastern region’s 15 reservoirs in Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura, with a storage capacity of 18.83 BCM, had 8.10 BCM as on April 23, down from 8.49 BCM as from April 16.

The 22 reservoirs in the two western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, with total storage capacity of 24.54 BCM, had available storage of 9.21 BCM as on April 23 from 9.71 BCM.

The 12 reservoirs in the four central states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, which have total storage capacity of 42.30 BCM, had a storage level of 16.24 BCM as on April 23 from 16.59 BCM as on April 16.

Similarly, the 30 reservoirs in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with a total capacity of 51.37 BCM, had storage of 8.92 BCM on April 23 against 9.52 BCM as on April 16.

As on April 23, states having better storage than the corresponding period last year are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Tripura, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
