November 4: The weak trend witnessed over the past few days for Australian and South African steam coal continued into November 3 even as select Indonesian varieties remained firm on limited availability, market sources said.
Increased availability amidst low demand from major buyers, who are expecting a further fall in prices, were primarily responsible for the weakness in prices, they said.
In fact, South African standard coal prices fell to $63.30 per ton, down 5.38% as compared to $66.90 on October 24 whereas Australian steam coal price (6,300 GAR) was down nearly 4% at $61.25 per ton.
In contrast, prices of Indonesian coal continued to remain firm on limited availability on the back of export license-related issues, sources added.
