Weekly US coal carloads total 66,651, up 3.1% on week: AAR

Weekly US coal carload originations totaled 66,651 in the week ended May 29, up 3.1% from the previous week and up 44.8% from the year-ago week, Association of American Railroads data showed June 2.
 
Over 21 weeks, originations were up 7.3% compared to the year-ago period. The five-year average for week 21 is 68,731, leaving the most recent week at a 3% deficit.
 
Coal originations made up 12.6% of total US traffic during the most recent week.
 
Canadian coal carload originations totaled 7,363, down 7.5% week on week and up 19.8% from the year-ago week. Through the year so far, Canadian carloads were up 7.7% compared to the 2020 period.
 
Coal carloads from the four major US Class I railroads were 70,878 in the most recent week and 1.4 million over 21 weeks, up 42.7% and 7%, respectively.
 
BNSF carloads totaled 29,120, down 2% from the previous week and up 24% from the year-ago week. Through the year so far, carloads on the rail were up 4.1% year on year. Coal also made up 14.4% of total weekly traffic.
 
Coal carloads rose 12.1% from the week before to 14,925 on the Union Pacific railroad. From the year-ago week, they jumped 19%. Over 21 weeks, UP coal carloads were down 8.5% compared to the year-ago period.
 
In the most recent week, UP coal carloads totaled 9% of all traffic on the rail.
 
CSX carloads were 13,879, up 13.2% week on week and up 90.1% year on year. Compared to the year-ago period, carloads were up 7.1% over 21 weeks. Coal carloads made up 11% of CSX's weekly traffic.
 
On Norfolk Southern, coal carloads totaled 12,954, down 6% from the previous week and up 100.5% from the year-ago week. Over 21 weeks, carloads were up 7.5% year on year, and in the most recent week, coal carloads totaled 9.2% of all traffic.
