Wet coal brings down power production in UP
06 Aug 2014
Anpara-C and Harduaganj units revived on Tuesday but rain dampened power situation in Uttar Pradesh. Most of the state-owned power plants were working at half the installed capacity because coal got wet in the rain, sources in Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited said.
Sources in UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited said power plants like Obra and Paricha were generating barely 60MW each against their installed capacity of more than 200MW. "Poor combustibility of coal is the main reason behind low generation of power from the units," said a senior official in UPPCL.
Sources said the total generation from state-owned power plants in UP was between 2,000MW and 2,200MW on Tuesday. "We are keeping a close watch on generation of power from the coal-fired power plants," said an official.
Meanwhile, 600 MW Anpara-C and 250 MW Harduaganj power units revived on Tuesday, adding significantly to power generation in UP. The two power units had tripped on Monday due to snags.
Their revival brought relief to the state government which has been frequently overdrawing from the national grid to meet power demand.
