Withdrawal of import duty on coal urged

Pakistan Industrial and Traders Association Front (PIAF) on Thursday urged the government to immediately withdraw one percent import duty on coal, as it will affect the government’s endeavours to promote alternative energy resources, a statement said.
PIAF Chairman Malik Tahir Javed said that the imposition of duty on coal is a sheer injustice towards the industrial sector.
The industrial sector is predominant consumer of coal because of severe gas shortage in the country, he said, adding that several industries have switched to coal due to unavailability of gas.
He said that the imposition of one percent import duty on coal will nullify the positive initiatives of the government to use coal as an alternative energy resource.
The industrial sector has spent millions of dollars to switch their plants from costly furnace oil to coal in order to bring down its input costs and to make its produces internationally competitive, he added.
