AES To Go Coal-Free By 2025
01 Mar 2022
The parent company of a coal-fired power plant in Petersburg says it will stop using coal by 2025.
AES made the announcement as part of an earnings report on Friday.
It's the parent company of AES Indiana, formerly known as Indianapolis Power and Light.
The company operates a plant in Petersburg that environmentalists call a "super polluter."
The report did not specify plans for the Pike County plant.
In a statement, Wendy Bredhold of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign, said the Petersburg facility's retirement should have been planned before now.
She points out that stakeholders, including the City of Indianapolis, asked AES to replace the plant with renewable energy in its 2019 long-term energy plan.
