Chinese companies completed
construction of the Hassyan Power Plant on May 16, 2022. The Dubai plant, the
Middle East's first clean coal-fired facility, is a major project under China’s
trade initiative to link economies into a China-centred trading network, the
Belt and Road Initiative. The 2,400 megawatt power plant is expected to
generate 20 percent of Dubai’s energy. The United Arab Emirates announced that
the US$3.4 billion coal plant will eventually transition to natural gas as part
of the UAE's 2050 net-zero carbon pledge.
