China’s pivot to Mongolian and Russian coal to slash capesize bulker demand, says Drewry

Nearly 80% of imports now come from Asian
neighbours, cutting tonne mile demand
China’s
increasing appetite for coking coal imports from Mongolia and Russia is likely
to have a severe impact on the dry bulk trade, said Drewry.
China’s
imports from Mongolia have been skyrocketing on the back of the latter’s
burgeoning domestic production and improved transportation links, the shipping
consultancy added.
Mongolia’s coking
coal production reached 82m tones in 2023, more than double the 39m tons
produced in the previous year.
