'Clean coal' war pits Mantashe against Eskom, experts and govt in power play over SA’s future

Clean coal is a "fantasy" of some of the country's decision-makers and if South Africa is to effectively reduce emissions, an energy system dominated by renewable energy is needed, according to the director of the Presidential Climate Change Commission, Dr Crispian Olver.
Olver was speaking at the annual wind energy conference - Windaba - which was held in Cape Town on Thursday.
Just 1 397km away in Johannesburg, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe told delegates of the Joburg Indaba mining conference - held virtually - there should be no rush to abandon coal in favour of renewables.
