Coal demand resilient to China's UN power station pledge

The mining industry remains upbeat on future coal demand despite President Xi Jinping's pledge at the United Nations to stop funding overseas coal-fired power plants.
“There are still some projects in the pipeline, which once finished, would still continue to consume coal over the next 20 years,” said Hendri Tan, marketing director at Adaro Indonesia, the country's second-largest coal miner by production volume, in a panel session at Coaltrans Asia Conference on Wednesday.
Hendri's comments came after President Xi Jinping announced China’s plan to stop funding coal-fired power plants worldwide at the United Nations General Assembly on the same day.
