The amount
of compensation likely
to be paid by taxpayers to coal power plants as a result of price caps remains
highly uncertain as generators keep a lid on information on coal costs.
A spokesman for Energy Minister Chris Bowen said rebates would
be paid to coal-fired generators “in the very rare circumstances in which
reasonable cost of production exceeds $125 a tonne”, the
price at which coal sold for electricity production has been capped.
