New Delhi: In a
strategic move to bolster its presence in the energy sector, Gujarat Mineral
Development Corporation (GMDC) has inked a development and
production agreement with the Ministry of Coal for
the operation of the Kudanali-Lubri coal mine in Odisha.
This marks GMDC’s third commercial coal mine in the state, significantly
enhancing its mining portfolio outside its traditional base in Gujarat.
The signing ceremony, held at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, formalizes GMDC’s
acquisition of the Kudanali-Lubri mine located in Angul district. This mine,
which is still partially explored, is reported to contain an estimated 396.10
million tonne of thermal coal, thereby boosting GMDC’s total coal reserves to
about 2040 million tonne.

Roopwant Singh,
IAS, Managing Director of GMDC, expressed optimism about the new venture,
saying, “The addition of the 'Kudanali-Lubri' coal mine in our portfolio not
only strengthens our resource base but also enhances our operational
efficiencies and cost-effectiveness in Odisha.”
The proximity of the new mine to GMDC's existing 'Baitarni West' coal mine is
expected to create operational synergies and streamline the resource
development process, contributing to more efficient mining operations.
