Mongolian and Russian coal exports via rail to China reduces Capesize tonne-mile demand
02 Aug 2024
The capesize shipping industry
is undergoing significant changes due to the rise of rail
transport and increased Russian coal imports, reducing reliance on seaborne
shipping. Mongolia’s booming coal production, primarily destined for China,
coupled with competitive pricing, is shifting trade dynamics and exerting
downward pressure on capesize freight rates. While overland coal imports are
increasing, seaborne imports remain robust, but the shift towards rail is
poised to transform future shipping patterns and decrease long-haul shipping
demand.
