NTPC achieves 100 MT coal production milestone in captive mines

29 Feb 2024

It was announced by the state-owned NTPC that the milestone of crossing the 100 million tonne (MT) coal production mark from its captive mines had been achieved. According to a statement by NTPC on February 25, 2024, the company stated that its coal mining subsidiary, NTPC Mining (NML), had successfully produced 100.04 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) of coal since the commencement of coal production in its initial coal mine, Pakri Barwadih, on January 1, 2017.

As per the company's information, the accomplishment of the first 50 MT coal production took 1,995 days, reaching the milestone on June 19, 2022. Subsequently, the next 50 MT coal production was achieved in a shorter span of 617 days, as reported by NTPC.

NTPC emphasised that the coal production from its captive mines plays a crucial role in ensuring the fuel security of the company and maintaining an efficient supply chain. Currently, NTPC Mining operates five operational captive coal mines, namely Pakri Barwadih, Chatti Bariatu, and Kerandari Coal Mines in Jharkhand, Dulanga Coal Mine in Odisha, and Talaipalli Coal Mine in Chhattisgarh.

It was stated that NML has set a target of achieving 100 MT coal production per annum by the year 2030. NTPC, operating under the Ministry of Power, stands as the largest power generation company in the country.
