Power restored at Convent Marine Terminal: SunCoke Energy

15 Sep 2021

Without power for over a week due to Hurricane Ida, the Convent Marine Terminal in Louisiana resumed normal operations Sept. 13, SunCoke Energy confirmed Sept. 14.

Located on the Lower Mississippi River, the terminal regained power over the weekend ending Sept. 12.

Normal operations were halted for a total of 13 days at the terminal, the only one on the Gulf Coast with direct rail access for oceangoing shipments.

SunCoke Energy said it halted activities at the terminal Aug. 31 after the hurricane caused "catastrophic damage" to its utility supplier's electrical transmission and distribution systems. The terminal itself sustained modest damage from the Category 4 storm.

"I want to thank all of our employees who worked diligently and safely to reestablish our operational capabilities under difficult circumstances," Convent Marine Terminal General Manager Mickey Gauldin said. "Their dedication has been exemplary, particularly in light of the larger and ongoing impacts of Hurricane Ida on our community."

The Convent Marine Terminal has 1.5 million tons of ground storage and two independent ship loading systems, with capable of accommodating cape-sized ocean carriers. It's operated by SunCoke Energy, a metallurgical and thermal coal producer headquartered in Lisle, Illinois, and operating in the Americas and Brazil.
