Sumitomo to shut down 56-MW coal-fired plant in Japan

Japanese diversified group Sumitomo Corp (TYO:8053) announced on
Tuesday it is shutting down a 56-MW coal-fired power plant in Fukushima
Prefecture.
The Onahama Power Plant in Iwaki City will
be retired at the end of March 2024 in line with Sumitomo's initiative to
achieve carbon neutrality.
Featuring two units, the facility has been
operational since October 2004 under Summit Onahama S-Power Corp. The latter is
owned 65% by Summit Energy Corp, a 100% subsidiary of Sumitomo Corp, and 35% by
Japanese salt maker Nihonkaisui Corp.
