Xcel Energy plans to exit coal by 2030, replaced by nuclear and gas
07 Feb 2024
Xcel Energy has asked Minnesota regulators for a runtime
extension of its two nuclear power plants and proposes to add wind, solar and
gas-fuelled peaking capacity as it upholds plans to exit coal power by the end
of 2030. Apart from running the Prairie Island and the Monticello nuclear
plants longer, Xcel wants to add 2,200 of firm, dispatchable capacity.
Feb 6 – In 2024, global gas demand is
forecast to grow by 2.5%, or 100 billion cubic metres (bcm), according to the
International Energy Agency (IEA). Colder winter weather this year pushed up
gas demand for space heating while the sharp drop in gas prices from 2022-highs
is bound to support the recovery of gas-fired power generation.
